The creative director and founder of the jewelry brand tells the story of the Italian company focusing on coil processing and the Marrakech, Marrakech Onde and Masai collections.
«Refined jewels to be worn every day» is the proposal of the Italian brand founded in 2000 and directed by Marco Bicego . «I remember when I was a boy sitting at the workbench in my father’s company. That’s where I started. I remember the emotion of touching and working yellow gold » explains the creative director Marco Bicego himself «It was my father who passed on to me the passion for this profession and gave me the courage to dare, to believe in my dreams». And today his approach continues the path begun with his father in the headquarters in Trissino (in the province of Vicenza) offering jewels that juxtapose the beauty of precious stones with natural morphologies. With a worldwide distribution that exceeds 50 countries, the brand focuses on the versatility of the jewels and on the artisanal workmanship — the techniques of the goldsmith tradition including the coil.
THE HISTORY OF COIL WORKING
Sometimes great things come from mistakes, and when in 2000 a machine dedicated to gold processing jammed, it gave life to a long spiral twisted wire. This sample, passed into the hands of Marco Bicego, became a true vision and can be considered on a par with the first coil specimen. Taking advantage of that production mishap, he subsequently studied a process that would allow him to find the same result with a very thin 18-karat gold ribbon.
«I was still working in my father’s company when I saw a chain that had been rejected because of a defect, ready to be recast. At that precise moment the spark was ignited.» Marco Bicego
Coil processing became the trademark of the Marrakech collection , one of the most representative and best-selling jewelry collections of the Italian brand. In the fall winter 2023 version, the protagonists are the bangles bracelets embellished with diamonds that celebrate femininity with refinement, creating a delicate music when worn on the wrist. Often worn in composition, the bracelets are available in three sizes: small, medium and large. An evolution of the same collection, Marrakech Onde gives the sinuous curves of the jewels the sparkle of precious diamond pavé. The new supply features single or double spiral links for necklaces, earrings and bracelets, with a slight twist and a diamond clasp. And finally we find Masai , a selection inspired by the art and tradition of African tribes, characterized by a flat spiral. Rings made of hand-worked wire enriched with pavé of brilliant-cut diamonds.
