There is a goal that every designer dreams of reaching, a sort of hyperuranion of the fashion system: directing Chanel . The brand of the two Cs , a symbol of timeless elegance, is known to represent the pinnacle for every fashion creator.
Chanel’s spring summer 2025 show, the first since Virginie Viard’s farewell to the French fashion house
After Virginie Viard ‘s departure , Chanel held several conversations with important designers and creatives, including the likes of Pieter Mulier , Pierpaolo Piccioli , Jeremy Scott and Marc Jacobs . Conversations that also involved the 40-year-old designer who has been at the creative helm of Bottega Veneta since 2021, Matthieu Blazy . And it is precisely on him, born in 1984 and of Franco-Belgian origin, that the choice fell as the new creative director of Chanel .
Matthieu Blazy is no stranger to high-profile challenges. At the helm of the Kering brand, he has ushered in a new era of growth and sophistication, winning over audiences with collections that masterfully combine impeccable craftsmanship with an innovative approach. And his career speaks for itself. Born in Paris, he trained at the Ecole nationale supérieure des arts visuels de La Cambre in Brussels, an institution renowned for shaping some of the industry’s most creative minds. After internships with two of the greats of contemporary fashion, Nicolas Ghesquière (then at the helm of Balenciaga) and John Galliano , the young talent began his journey as a menswear designer for Raf Simons , an experience that led him to Maison Martin Margiela , where he worked on artisanal lines and women’s ready-to-wear .
His contribution to Margiela has remained in the collective memory, especially for the famous looks worn by Kanye West during the «Yeezus» tour (2013-2014). In 2014 he arrived at Celine , working as a senior designer under Phoebe Philo , before reuniting with Raf Simons at Calvin Klein , where he helped shape the brand’s vision from 2016 to 2019.
His arrival at Chanel is the culmination of a long and successful career. Blazy inherits a House that has navigated the decades without losing its identity, with Virginie Viard having gracefully preserved and developed Karl Lagerfeld ’s legacy in recent years.
